14-Day Calm Essential Guide

Your 14-Day Calm Essential Plan

A structured two-week programme — 15 minutes a day, measurable results.

Before You Begin

  • One session daily, 10–15 minutes. Morning sessions work best.
  • Use your dog's normal daily food — no extra calories.
  • Start on easy difficulty. Build challenge gradually.
  • Always supervise. Xylitol-free spreads only.

Week 1 — Foundation

Day Focus What to do
1 Snuffle intro Scatter treats on top of the mat — visible only. Positive first impression matters most.
2 First snuffle Tuck treats lightly into folds. Praise calm focused sniffing. Watch for the first moment of real concentration — that is enrichment working.
3 Lick Mat intro Spread wet food, yogurt, or xylitol-free peanut butter. Offer while already calm. Note how quickly licking produces visible relaxation.
4 Combine Snuffle Mat 8 min then Lick Mat as cool-down. This activity-then-soothing sequence is your core daily template.
5 Puzzle intro Show treat going into the puzzle. Let your dog investigate. Help only if real frustration appears — goal today is curiosity.
6 Pre-departure Full 10–12 min Snuffle Mat session before leaving. A mentally tired dog settles 60–70% faster when alone.
7 Rest + assess Lick Mat only. Observe: sleeping more? Settling faster? Less reactive? Record what you notice — these are your baselines.

Week 2 — Progression

Day Focus What to do
8 Deeper hides Push treats deep into mat folds. Longer sniff sessions produce more mental fatigue and calmer evenings.
9 Frozen Lick Mat Prepare the Lick Mat the night before and freeze it. A frozen mat lasts 3–4x longer and produces deeper, more sustained calm.
10 Puzzle solo Set up the puzzle and step back. Let your dog solve it without guidance. Patience and independent problem-solving are the goal.
11 Full circuit Snuffle Mat (8 min) then Treat Puzzle (5 min) then Frozen Lick Mat. This is your complete toolkit in sequence. Notice the calm at the end.
12 Alone-time test Run the full circuit, then leave for 30–45 minutes. Most owners notice a significantly calmer return greeting by this point.
13 Mealtime enrichment Hide your dog's entire breakfast in the Snuffle Mat instead of the bowl. One of the most effective long-term habits for anxiety reduction.
14 Graduate Full circuit. Your dog now has a daily enrichment routine. The habit is established — maintain it going forward.
After Day 14: Rotate tools to prevent habituation. Feed meals through the mat 3–4 times per week. Freeze the Lick Mat regularly. Increase puzzle difficulty by hiding fewer, better-hidden treats.

Safety

  • Always supervise sessions.
  • Xylitol-free spreads only — check labels carefully.
  • Wash Snuffle Mat at 30°C regularly. Clean Lick Mat and Puzzle after each use.
  • If food guarding or aggression appears, stop and seek advice from a qualified dog behaviourist.
